I didn’t realise that Twitstat has a list of the clients which post most frequently to Twitter (that are tracked by @twitstat), until I saw the recent list published by Mashable.

The web interface tops the list at 29.57%, then it’s

• Tweetdeck 10.58% (Uber client for Twittering and monitoring)
• Twitterfeed 5.54% (Automated website and blog feeds)
• Twhirl 4.92% (Effective Twitter client)
• Twitteriffic 3.79% (Twitter client for mobile).

And the next four places are all mobile clients, with Twitpic in tenth.

Warren at Twittermaven took things a little further by aggregating the mobile, desktop and utility categories, and pointing out more people use mobile to post than desktop clients. One of his posters has also pointed out that the data could be misleading as people might post through the full web page on mobile internet.

But I’d expect the trend to be fairly close to reality. A mobile-optimised experience is likely to be an easier ’sell’ than moving from the web interface to a client. And although early adopters and corporate Tweeters can find huge value from tools like Tweetdeck,  that’s not the average Twitter user.

The top 10 applications account for 70% of usage, which conforms to The Long Tail. Friends of 140char on the list include MrTweet at #40 and disapointly Cesare’s great Posty client is down the list at #211.

Well, I expressed reservations about how many organisations would find use from Techcrunch 50 winner Yammer, and have a strange feeling that in many cases I might be proved right.

For example, the corporate Yammer group I’m in has 11 members, a few unanswered invites, and a three day gap between posts. Three days should not pass between posts on a microblog, particularly when it was only me posting for the last four days! And that’s despite a few of my usual web geek colleagues popping up.

Compare that to my Tweetstats, despite being pretty busy over the last few days. Part of the reason is that, like Johnny Five in Short Circuit, I need input. Yammer almost seems like a training pool before venturing into the Olympic pool with the grown-ups on Twitter. And that’s regardless of the fact Yammer has opened up it’s API.

There’s quite an interesting post by Chris Brogan on how the Twhirl client support for the open source, on your own servers Twitter, Laconi.ca, means that Yammer is irrelevant.

Incidentally, after Del.icio.us became delicious.com, it seems really strange to see identi.ca, laconi.ca, present.ly (the other corporate microblogging offering) etc!

I was going to use the Twit (This Week In Tech) Army example of self-hosted microblogging, but with comedy timing, the site appears to be down!

Twitter (And Friendfeed, Jaiku and Pownce) application Twhirl has now added support for open-source microblog platform Identi.ca. And, as Cnet explains, it’ll have a feature that Twitter users have asked for – push updates which send updates direct to the client, meaning no need to keep refreshing so much, and theoretically less load on the Identi.ca server.

I’m intending to take a look at the new client, and start posting more to Identi.ca, as I have a sneaky suspicion it will be one of the two or three microblogging sites with enough longevity to reach the mainstream. And I’m not sure Plurk will make it. (I’m not the only one).

Each group will have a demographic, whether it’s different due to age, class, geography etc, just as the current social network sites separate out: Facebook, Myspace, Orkut, Hi5, Bebo. But I think there will be more crossover, as people look for a site to jump to if the Fail Whale hits Twitter, or the A-Team turn up at Plurk. And an open source platform with less server load seems like a good place to build a back-up Twittergeddon bunker in times of need. After all, social networks seem slow, and blogs almost glacial if you have a serious microblog addiction. And IM won’t let you interact with enough people at once.

Twitter has enough established users. Identi.ca could become the archetype for open-source reliability. But who else can sustain themselves and offer something interesting? Place your bets in the comments!
