Slight Wordpress issues…

Dan Thornton | December 21, 2009

Everything might seem normal here (Especially compared to www.thewayoftheweb.net), but behind the scenes the upgrade to Wordpress 2.9 appears to have caused some issues, so I’ll ask your patience while I get out my hammers and socket wrenches and fix it all..

Not long to donate to Movember…

Dan Thornton | November 27, 2009

Cross-posting from my other blog at www.thewayoftheweb.net – it might not be microblogging or lifestreaming, but it’s a really good cause. And my itchy top lip deserves more donations….

The month of Movember is coming to an end on Monday, so if you haven’t donated yet to the worthy cause of raising awareness and funds to tackle male prostate cancer, then maybe this will inspire you.

movember2

Yes, that’s my shameful Mo, taken a week ago. It’s not much more impressive now, although it has filled out a bit to look like a less threadbare broom, and more like a doormat made of wire wool.

So if you want to encourage me to take some suitably foolish pictures over the next 4 days, then you need donate. It only takes a matter of seconds, and many of you will have just been paid – so why not donate one or two Christmas drinks worth, save yourself a bit of a hangover, and feel worthy for the rest of the year.

Donate to Dan’s appalling Mo here.

If you want to know more about prostate cancer, start on the Movember Men’s Health page. But the basic facts are that despite the fact men are embarrassed and quite frankly crap at going to the doctor’s and staying healthy, 35,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK every year. It mainly affects men over the age of 50, and the good news is that if it’s detected early and treated, it’s highly curable.

Go on, donate…

  • Twitter Trending analysis – meish dot org: life, unfolding

Brilliant observation/tongue-in-cheek graphing of the lifespans of a trending Twitetr topic by Meg Pickard. I can’t help enjoying the journey over the Hump of Irrelevance

  • Twares: United Airlines Offers Special Fares to Twitter Users

Aside from the cringe-inducing name (Twares? Oh, FFS) it’s perfectly reasonable for companies to be offering special deals via Twitter – as long as they realise they also need to interact around them, even if it’s on a seperate account. The reason Dell was successful was because they had the offers, but they also had a big team of known individuals who you could contact to find out more or solve problems etc.

A really good point about the flaws and bugs in Twitter’s current search functionality – then again, Google have several products with similar flaws, including my own experience with the random number generator know as Google Blog Search

You can now subscribe to 140Char on your Kindle

Dan Thornton | May 19, 2009

If you’re the proud owner of an Amazon Kindle, you can now subscribe to 140Char.com.

Of course, you can also read it all here for free, subscribe via RSS, or receive the latest posts via email.

But I thought I might as well make it available should anyone be happy to pay for the convenience of Kindle usage, so if that’s you, good news!

  • Good.ly: Shorten Your URLs for Good

Shorten your urls and send 55% of any referral fees you earn from affiliates go to charity.
Better than nothing – if you’re not looking to finance yourself or a business.

  • Samsung perches Twitter on your TV – mirror.co.uk

This will appeal to anyone who has taken part in a Twitter backchannel during a live event on TV – for instance #Eurovision. No more sitting with a warm laptop on your knees or trying to watch your mobile at the same time as the TV.
Not sure if it’s really a selling point to justify a new TV though

  • Twitter to Sell Tools, Not Advertising | Twitterrati

Interesting that they’re not selling ads simply because they don’t have the staff – surely selling analytics features to mainstream businesses generally also requires a sales pitch? Or are there really enough businesses experimenting with statistics and analysis accounts to drive the revenue they need?

Add comments with your Twitter profile, or video comments via Seesmic

Dan Thornton | May 17, 2009

One of the things I’ve had on my ‘todo’ list for quite a while was to revisit the various ways to connect my blog and related discussions and comments to the various social networks where they might be happening.

So I’ve now got Disqus running, which means you can log in and post comments via your Twitter and Facebook profiles, or even video comments with Seesmic. It will also hopefully aggregate any discussion taking place on sites including Friendfeed, which is also useful for getting an overview of all the conversations happening.

I’m also playing around with link posting via both Diigo and Delicious, and some other backend tools.

The end result should be a better and far more useful 140char.com for you – and hopefully some better and more efficient ways to share information for me!

Some personal news…

Dan Thornton | April 29, 2009

If you’re been wondering about the slight lack of posts recently, it’s all explained by the fact I’ve left Bauer Media after eight years…

So I’ll be reorganising and rebooting things a little before starting my new role…

If you can see this message…

Dan Thornton | February 22, 2009

Then you’re one of the lucky ones.

At some point on Friday it appears something has caused a number of people to find this blog inaccessible.

And the same problem is also causing a tidal wave of spam to slip past Akismet and flood the pending comments section.

I’ve notified my hosting company, and I’m looking into the causes and solutions – meanwhile I’m marking every spam message as spam, but with one message every couple of minutes, it’s extremely frustrating.

As a result, I’m probably going to find it tricky to post until the problem has been resolved – however, you can still find my latest posts appearing at TheWayoftheWeb.net for social media marketing, digital publishing, journalism and other stuff.

Incidentally, if anyone is interested in partnering or collaborating with me here (once the access problem is solved!), let me know…

Adding some new functionality despite spam problems….

Dan Thornton | February 20, 2009

For some reason, Akistmet and IP blocking doesn’t seem to be countering the tide of spam comments I’m getting – I’ve had some good suggestions for causes via Twitter, but not solved it as yet.

So while I delete 101 really, really obvious spam messages, I’m also playing around with some more functionality – you can see an early start on the monetise Twitter/Jobs page.

If I’m not here when you stop by…

Dan Thornton | January 29, 2009

You can always find my Twitter profile.

It’s proving to be the most effective way to communicate when family concerns take priority over blogging for a couple of days.

The good news is that all is well, and posts will be back up to speed for next week.
