‘Twitter’ in the dictionary but Times overstates the case
Dan Thornton | September 1, 2009Interesting to see that Twitter, as a verb, has made it into the Collins English Dictionary.
Firstly, surely the verb form is to ‘tweet’, e.g. I can haz tweet, I can haz tweeted, we can haz tweeted?
Secondly online abbreviations and common parlance seems to be attributed to Twitter by The Times when in fact it’s existed online and offline for several years. For example, the sound of an air kiss ‘mwah’ has been used by people for as long as I can remember when meeting in a classy wine bar after work?
And the etymology of ‘meh’ is surely traced back to the original well of most internet language – the videogames forum.
I look forward the outrage at other internet derived terms, including ‘noob’, ‘woot’, ‘OMG’ and ‘wtf’.
